On August 30, 2016 President Obama commuted Rudy Martinez’s life sentence! We reached out to Rudy, and his clemency attorney Mark Osler, for their responses. Rudy, understandably, was still in disbelief:
I’m still in a fucking daze…
This is not over, not by a long shot. There is much work to be done on the part of all these men and woman who also need to get back to their families as well.
But I do want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your help and support. It’s people like you guys who give people like me, hope.
Thank you very much,
Rudy Martinez. (EX-Prisoner of the “Drug war”)
Rudy’s clemency attorney, Mark Osler, gave Rudy all the credit:
The thing about Rudy’s case is that he earned clemency by his remarkable work in prison. His record of rehabilitation was remarkable—he has taken more classes than most graduate students!
Indeed, Rudy took at least 190 classes between March 1991 through April 2016, totaling almost 2,200 hours of courses ranging from GED courses to history to microbiology to psychology to leather craft and web design, and everything in between. Rudy’s freedom is well deserved. Congratulations Rudy and thank you President Obama!
