We have been fighting the War on Drugs in a one-dimensional approach. We attempt to take out the suppliers and we rarely address the demand in ways other than incarceration. We think of Drug Trafficking Organizations (DTOs) are mostly foreign, in location and application, to our way of life. In reality, though, DTOs are more like our economic giants than we like to acknowledge.
In a piece titled, “Narconomics: How Drug Cartels Operate like Wal-Mart and McDonald’s,” author Tom Wainwright, author of Narconomics, posits that DTOs are actually not as foreign as we may like to believe. He argues that DTOs utilize the very same business and supply-chain model, a fact that we must acknowledge to ourselves if we are to win the War on Drugs.
